Is The Hawksmoor the best steak house in London? I'll let you know if I ever try all the rest. One thing's possibly beyond doubt, the wizard behind the bar mixes the best Martinis this side of 1926. Combined with an excellent no fuss, super relaxed, while efficient approach to food and service puts it right up the list of city favourites.
Turn Left out of the far end of Spitalfields and when you see the now weird and winderful Commercial Tavern you've almost gone too far. Look again and you'll just spot the unobtrusive Hawksmoor by your left hand. Arrive early, sample the cocktails and float to your table. Choose a medium (400g) or large (600g) ribeye, supplied of course by Ginger Pig, get some tripple cooked chips on the side and that's it. That's the recipie for a seriously good night's eating. Serve with one of the wines from the cheaper side of the list and your uncle's name is Bob. If you follow these instructions and don't like what you end up with, well, I'll eat a cow skin hat.
Update : 09/07 - just back from a re-visit and the special of the day; Fillet steak, 400g, £10 per 100g was simply the fines jewel of a cow I have ever encountered. Memories are made of this
